Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT): Basic Training for Educators & Student Support Professionals

An Internationally Accredited Professional Development Training Program

Designed exclusively for Educators, School Counselors, Student Support Professionals, and aspiring professionals preparing to work in student support or related fields.

Thursday, 9 October 2026 | Mercure Kathmandu Sukedhara Heights | 10 AM onwards

About the Program

Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT): Basic Training for Educators & Student Support Professionals is a practical, manual-based professional development workshop introducing the core principles of mentalization and their application in educational settings. Rather than focusing only on what a student says or does, participants learn to look beneath behavior and consider what the student may be thinking, feeling, believing, or experiencing. The workshop also emphasizes understanding and reflecting on professionals’ own thoughts, feelings, assumptions, and responses.

Through evidence-informed teaching, practical activities, case discussions, role-play, and reflective practice, participants will explore key MBT concepts and develop more thoughtful ways of responding to challenging behavior, emotional distress, conflict, dysregulation, and difficult student-professional interactions.

Why This Program?

Working with children and young people requires more than understanding behaviour, it requires understanding the thoughts, feelings, intentions, and perspectives that may lie behind it. Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) offers a valuable framework for developing this deeper understanding, particularly when emotions run high and relationships become challenging. This workshop introduces educators and student-support professionals to practical mentalization principles that can strengthen curiosity, self-awareness, perspective-taking, and more thoughtful responses in everyday work with students.

What Will You Explore?

  • Understanding Mentalization - What mentalization is and why it matters when working with children and young people
  • Mentalizing and Non-Mentalizing Modes - Recognising shifts in how we understand ourselves and others
  • Attachment, Trauma & Emotional Regulation - Exploring how relationships, stress, and emotional states influence behaviour
  • Understanding Risk Behaviour - Viewing self-harm, impulsivity, substance use, and other risk behaviours through a mentalizing lens
  • The Mentalizing Stance - Developing curiosity, openness, uncertainty, and practical ways of responding
  • Practical MBT Skills & Intervention Scripts - Applying mentalization principles to challenging student situations
  • Professional Self-Reflection & Self-Care - Understanding our own responses and protecting against emotional overload and burnout

Experiential & Applied Learning

The training uses realistic school situations and guided activities to help participants experience and practise mentalizing rather than simply learn about it.

Participants will engage in:

  • Case-based exploration
  • Guided reflection
  • Structured discussion
  • Role-play and perspective-taking
  • Real-life school scenarios
  • Practical mentalizing exercises
  • Professional self-reflection
  • Application to current student-support situations
